John 1:1-5
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
A couple of years ago my wife and I took our kids camping. In preparation for the trip we bought each kid a light that was attached to a headband. All you had to do was put it on your head press a button and a nice bright shaft of light beamed right in front of you. They were a big hit with the kids who were wearing them before the sun had even set. At first I was a little disappointed that they were not very bright but the lower the sun sank the brighter the lights got until we were surrounded by darkness with only the light of the headlamps to lead the way. And lead the way they did, showing us the way back to our camp site, and into unexpected joy as Abby and Caleb chased the lights in the middle of that darkness.
Yet even the darkness of that night cannot compare to the dark days in which we live. Days that should be bright are darkened by terror, hate, addiction, and human trafficking. However, the darker the day becomes, the brighter the light shines and the light that pierces the darkness is Jesus. The life He lived is the light for all men. We will never be lost following that light and we will even be surprised by the joy we find as we chase after it. Trying to comprehend what the darkness never can.
